On Radio 3's Early Music Show I have just heard Jim Couza playing 'The Devil among the Tailors' from Playford - Wow - wish I could play like that, better practice some more I guess. My husband could not believe it was only one person playing.

I was sent an old photo of a mystery Hammered Dulcimer player. Taken in Ireland in 1968. Turns out to be of the famous ANDY DOWLING. See this photo & another older photo, which might be of a younger Andy, on this thread. My late husband played and repaired dulcimers. I would love to find new homes for some of his instruments, including a small 19th century qanun, a 1920s santouri and a 1970s yang chin.

This is intended for Jenny Coxon..
I was to be in her class at Harpers Ferry, WVa in America this weekend. I managed to cut my hand on the bandsaw finishing a hammer dulcimer I wanted to use at the UPPER POTOMAC DULCIMER FEST. I was unable to attend and missed the experience of being in Jenny\'s company. I have been going up there for six years now and at age 72, still feel a grand kinship with the \"regulars\" who attend and look forward to my \"new\" teachers.
In reading reports from previous NONSUCH CLUB reports, I noticed mention of a Xu Pingxin being a guest lecturer. My wife and I took a cruise several years ago and a key show performer was a Pingxin and I can not help wondering if this could be the same. In any event his playing was mesmerizing to me.
Most folks with a knowledge of the hammer dulcimer are fascinating to me so, I\'m easily impressed.
I am the lesser for having missed Jenny\'s class.

Hello there,
Thought you might like to know that I was given a bunch of photos last night, which were taken at the Causeway Dulcimer Festival '05. Now I have posted them on my Dulcimer Player's Forum & as some Nonsuch members attended this small event, I thought you might be interested in checking them out. So here's the link: http://eurodulcimers.proboards74.com/index.cgi?board=events&action=display&thread=1205461472 Cheers

BBC Radio 3 Late Junction - tomorrow, Wednesday September 26th 23.15 until 1am Thursday is to have music by the Hungarian Cimbalom player Kalman Balogh. I probably won\'t stay up to listen because of work but will have the radio on - hope some of you manage to catch it. For those of us that fall asleep, it\'s available on the Listen Again facility on the Radio 3 website.
Looking forward to Launde! F

About time the dulcimer had its own website. Most underated musical instrument. I first heard it on the Steeleye Span album Please to see the King back in the early 1970\'s and had to have one. The track was The Lark in the Morning.

Just half watching a programme on BBC4 called The Million Pound Bird Book about James Audubon - artist and naturalist. 'Why is she telling us about this?' I hear you ask. Answer - some of the back ground music is for fiddle and, yes, Hammered Dulcimer. It was even shown being played - Hoorah! as my daughter would say. So look out for the programme, it's bound to be on BBC2 sometime.
Best wishes, Fenella

Mystery Hammered Dulcimer player?
Here's an interesting old photo, an American H-D playing friend Paul Gifford sent over to me, yesterday. It's of three musicians, Fiddle, Flute & Hammered Dulcimer players. However, naturally enough it's the Dulcimer player we are both keen to put a name to!
It looks like it was taken in Ireland & the fact that the man on the right is playing a Fife sized flute makes me think it might just have been taken in the North, but who knows? That's probably just wishful thinking on my part! Well, it would be cool wouldn't it, to find a long lost photo of John Rea!
Anyway, here's the link:

While I\'ve been thinking so much about communication between Dulcimer players, including of course members here, I was just wondering how many Nonsuchers do a bit of networking via MySpace?
I\'ve actually, just this weekend, set up a MySpace for my new Forum & I already have over 50 Dulcimer friend\'s details, & in most cases, samples of their music to listen to, from my space - at the click of a mouse!
If any Nonsuchers are Spacers, then why not call over to my space:

Hello there,
Following on from my letter on May 10th when I asked here about a UK Dulcimer Forum, I have had no replies, so assumed that there probably is not a Forum here, so the long & the short of it is ..... I decided to start one myself.
It is The \'Dulcimer Player\'s Forum\'
& you will find it at:
http://eurodulcimers.proboards74.com/index.cgi
My on-going Poll, over at the excellent U.S. Dulcimer Forum, \'Everything Dulcimer\', revealed that only a tiny fraction of active members on that forum are actually from over here, but as we all know there are many active enthusiasts over here too. So, in an effort to encourage more contact from them and hopefully spread the Dulcimer word over here, I am trying to start up this UK/Irish based Dulcimer forum.
I had a bad experience when trying to get another Trad music forum off the ground here, from the dreaded SPAMMERS, so I have tried to nail this one down, pretty tightly, which may well put some people off, but hopefully enough of the more dedicated & persistent Dulcimer enthusiasts will follow through the register & password process to help me establish a useful vehicle for the promotion of our beloved Dulcimers.
It may also prove to be a useful tool for anyone organising a tour over here! ;-)
Cheers,
Dick Glasgow

P.S. Just for the record I actually like the flashing lights here, they bring the pages alive for me ..... all the fun of the Fair, eh! :-)
P.P.S. For anyone who is interested, you can hear some of my Dulcimer playing at my \'Banjo Hangout\' at:
http://www.banjohangout.org/myhangout/home.asp?id=9832
P.P.P.S. Wouldn\'t it be nice to have the opportunity to post some of our tunes on this site ... <<<hint>>>
:-)

I regularly post on the Forum of \'Everything Dulcimer\' & recently I posted a Poll to try to find out how many active members lived outside the USA, & also which areas of the USA were most populated by Dulcimer players.
Apart from myself, only one other member from the UK & Ireland has logged in so far!
This made me wonder if it was time we had a Dulcimer Forum in the UK/Ireland to help promote the instruments & help keep all the Dulcimer players in touch with one-another, over here, & help us get in touch with our Dulcimer playing European neighbours?
Has Nonsuch ever tried to run a Forum?
Does a Dulcimer Forum already exist over here?
By the way, if you are curious, here is that ED Poll:

Just about to get a dulcimer and have found this site useful in providing info, but could it be toned down a little as all the flashing and booming detract greatly from what is a good site. I am sure that it would be very hard to use for someone with reduced vision.

My late husband was a player of cimbalom & dulcimers, amongst other instruments. He also renovated them. I have a full size pedal cimbalom he was working on. The maker is Istvan Horvath, & it dates from about 1900. George had restored the actual instrument, but as it was missing legs & pedal he ordered these from Hungary & was in the process of fitting them when he became ill. I have detailed drawings of what he was doing & all the bits. I also have lots of spares, - bridges, rest pins, felts & strings etc. If anyone out there is interested in any of this, please email me. My website includes a short biography of my husband, who was multi-talented!

This is just question from dulcimer fan. I really felt in love with it's sound and spirit. Nearly for half of year I search on internet and search for all info and this pages were wanderfuly helpful. I would just ask for your opinnion or little info. I would like to start with dulcimer (I play harp for 5 years now) and I have to wait now half of year before I will have enough money to buy some, but even (it's because bad currency change between Uk and my land) it will be still for me pretty expensive, so I will watch SALE page here, but I was also curious about prices of other makers. I found only Tim's pages. I wrote to Mr. Frood to ask for price of his student model, but still have no answer. Do you know how expensive he is or other dulcimer makers. Also my other chance was to find as much informations as possible about construction and ask my fried (harp builder)to build or order some kit. Does someone from UK builders sells also kits? From US it would be too expensive for me because postal fees cost nearly the same like dulcimer alone. Thank you very much.

check out my website! Journeying, drawing, painting, photography. Several of my drawings and portraits appeared in Nonsuch News a while ago, and if anyone would like a portrait, let me know. Am out of work and need to find the costs! A beautiful, sensitive life drawing of you playing would be £40 (good A4 print, mounted).

I am a classical guitarist who now has a naff left hand, through cancer and lymphoedema and as I really need to play something,I am looking at trying to play the hammer dulcimer instead as I think I may be able to grip the hammers whereas I cannot wrap my hand around a fretboard. How much will I need for a basic instrument, how hard is it to learn, how do you tune them etc etc. Thanks.

Just purchased my first dulcimer on Friday, a beautiful handmade dulcimer made by a local man. It was made in 1995, and it looks brand new. It is #12, and has an unbelievable sound. I don't even know how to play it, but it was so beautifully made I just had to buy it. I bought it at an auction. Wow! Am I ever pumped! It is walnut, spruce, and sassafras. Absolutely gorgeous! I am now online, trying to learn everything I can about the dulcimer. One day I WILL learn how to play, even though I am handicapped in my left hand due to a hunting accident. It is too beautiful to just hang on a wall. It needs to be played. And thank you for your wonderful website. It has helped me tremendously. God bless!

Good to see you're up and current. We get a lot of British tourists where we play here in Phoenix, and we try and direct them to you when they express interest in the dulcimer. The world needs more dulcimers in it and if we all work together, maybe it will happen. Hope to come meet you all in person some day.

Hello,
I am a dulcimer player for a few years. Playing alone or with friends our tunes we have composed.
My dulcimer has been made by Mr Frood and i am very proud of it.
Does anybody got news from Mr Frood ? I haven't seen him for 3 or 4 years Now.
I am leaving in Bordeaux, the south west of France. Hammered dulcimer is not a traditionnal instrument around here and i would be very pleased to have news from other dulcimer players in the world.
Thank you

I have been looking for a musical instrument to learn, and loved the sound of the dulcimer sound track played at 'Faust' at the Salisbury festival. Roger Frood, who made the dulcimers, was in the audience and gave me details about his dulcimers (of course) and this website.
Problem is, if I am going to go for it, I need a teacher. Do you have a list of dulcimer teachers, and do any live in West Wales??

McSpadden dulcimers are made about a 2 hour drive from my house. He retired, sold the business a few years ago, but the new owners still produces great dulcimers. If anyone is interesting in purchasing the finest of dulcimers, let me know. Our prices are very reasonable. My dulcimer website will soon be up and running.

Fascinating site! Have always loved the sound of the hammer dulcimer and have always wondered how easy it was to play etc. Your FAQ page has helped but I was wondering if any one knows of a teacher/ someone who would help me get started in the Bristol/Bath area?

You need more pictures of Rosemary! I just got back from Augusta Heritage Center and took Hammered Dulcimer lessons with Patty Looman-Rosemary was in our class. According to our Kentucky student, she was the only non-English speaking person in our class. Personally I thought that was the guy from Arkansas! Tell her hello and I hope she finally gets a good night sleep. If you ever want to exchange songs let me know.

I am setting up a little 'dulcimer museum' here in va. Was wondering if anyone knows the maker of the small solid body dulcimers that were made for dave cousins/simon nicol/richard t? Dave says the guy still makes em (got his in 72). Would love to obtain one of his if I can. Any other luthiers who may wish to donate an example of their work are welcome to contact us. Sincerely, John

I am interested in playing the mountain dulcimer. I have only seen one been played by Jean Ritchie on TV along with Aly Bain & Mike
Seeger, And just one record John Denver's Berkly Woman. I have a Dulcimer & I have made my own strumstick. I can strum and pick lots of tunes on both of them but as I have not heard a lot of
Dulcimer music I'm not sure that I am playing it corectly. I also play Fiddle mandolin, 5 string banjo, guitar, and other stringed instruments. I have never met another person who plays one or knows what it is. I have taken it to some jam sessions and got some funny looks. I have 3 books that gave me the basics, one By Louis Hornbostle with Celtic music, I think that one is far to awkward to play and overly fancy. Sorry I am getting carried away. before I go back and re read all of your website can you tell me of anyone near where I live who plays
the MD.

I am listening currently to the program featuring Mr. Frood on the BBC. I caught the show a couple of hours ago, and listened until they repeated it. There was no web reference mentioned during the programme, but it only took me two tries on Google to find the site. Enjoyed the music, history and references to Coleridge. Thought it was a great bit. Cheers.

muy bueno el sitio
yo tengo un dulcimer casero hecho en argentina por mi familia (alemanes de Rusia) y es muy util para mi el material del sitio de Nonsuch.

Because the Nonsuch Dulcimer Club specializes in the dulcimer, I thought
you might want to know about an inexpensive yet very
powerful music notation program called "MusEdit" which can
handle all aspects of music for dulcimer - tablature,
chord diagrams, alternate tunings, and more. If you're interested have a look at the web site

Does anyone know how to make Box Harps like a chap I know in Irchester, Northants? They're "Ace"!

Saw my first Dulcimer at the Edinburgh Harp Festival and wanted to know more ... and thanks to your articles, I now do. Will pass on info to my friend who is completely taken with the instrument and is considering buying one. A visually pleasing and informative web site which captures the essence of an actual club. Thanks.

Excellent web site. I am researching with an interest in buying a dulcimer for my wife to be as a wedding present. As she is a beginer, I would appreciate any info as to where to purchase a suitable instrument. At the mo, a student 12/11 from dustry strings in the US is favourite (prelude I think??) would appreciate advice/comments. AJR
